ORIGIN

Indonesia is the world’s fourth largest producer and contributes almost 10 million bags (60kgs) to global coffee production each year. It’s favourable tropical climate conditions, nutrient-rich soils and varied terroir nurtures many micro-climates which influence the diversity of Indonesian coffee. The Hindu Island of Bali is one such example and has been undergoing a revival in producing high quality coffees in recent years. The Kintamani district, where this coffee is grown in the north of the island, sits on the western edge of the large caldera wall of the volcanic Mount Batur and is inhabited by the native Balinese people, Bali Aga.

PRODUCER

The Karana community represents a collective effort of nearly 400 smallholder producers in the region. The farms, situated at an average elevation of 1,200 meters, and spanning 500 hectares, cultivate the S795 and Kartika coffee varieties. Kartika was first grown in Indonesia by the Portuguese Centro de Investigacao das Ferrugens do Cafeirro in 1987 and is a natural mutation of the Catuai variety – widely celebrated for its excellent cup profile.

The west monsoon brings significant rain from October to April, triggering flowering and cherry production before harvesting between July to September. Ater the cherries are harvested, pulped, and washed in fermentation tanks, they are sun dried in parchment. Although the coffee in the region is farmed organically, it is not certified.

Karana is a privately-owned coffee producing organization that works to increase the quality of local coffee production by supporting growers through agronomic training and the sharing of resources. Their goal is to achieve the highest quality coffee possible through different and processing methods and a holistic approach to agricultural practices. The producers also intercrop fruit and vegetable crops to enhance the biodiversity and sustainability of their farming practices.

ROAST

Sourced through our friends at Café Imports, we’re super excited to present our first coffee from Bali. We love this coffee for its balance, nougat-like sweetness and white chocolatey body, with a hint of dried apricot in the finish. Delicious across a range of brew methods and can be enjoyed at any time of the day, or night!
