Producer:
A widow in Muyinga built a coffee business in an industry built by and for men, and she named it after the Kirundi word for courage, because that's exactly what it took. She learned from Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian and JNP Coffee alongside other women farmers, and now she's the one teaching the next ones coming up. This Bourbon grows at 1,683 meters and gets naturally processed at a wet mill women run start to finish. Every part of this coffee is someone refusing to be told no.
Place:
Burundi is landlocked, hard to get coffee out of, and still produces some of the most complex cups in East Africa. Ngozi, Kayanza, Muyinga, farmed 1,600 to 2,000 meters, processed at washing stations built on the same model as Ethiopia's but run tighter, many led by women who took over an industry that wasn't built with them in mind. Harvest runs March through July. Worth every mile it travels.
