Reinel Borbon (El Espejo)

Description

Finca El Espejo is located in Santa María, Huila, Colombia, and managed by Reinel Borbon, a 48-year-old, second-generation coffee grower who has been in the coffee industry for more than 15 years. The farm consists of 4 hectares of land and sits at an elevation of 1,850 m.a.s.l. Reinel initially harvested lentils and grains on the farm, but he saw an opportunity with coffee. Now, he has around 13,000 coffee trees in production of the Pink Bourbon, Caturra, and Colombia varieties. All lots start with a careful harvest of the ripest cherries and an initial 20-hour dry fermentation in cherry before being de-pulped. The coffee was then placed in open tanks to ferment for 48 hours before being washed and placed to dry in raised beds. This particular Pink Bourbon lot is honey processed, so it was dried in mucilage.

Reinel’s expertise in fermentation and processing is apparent in his coffees. We taste a delicate wininess in this cup. It is playful but clean and balanced like pineapple juice, with deep sweetness and subtle spices like dates and mulled wine. In structure and body this coffee reminds us of ripe nectarine.
