About Finca Potosi, Cafe Granja La Esperanza
Potosí is the original farm in the Herrera family's Café Granja La Esperanza project in Valle del Cauca. Rigoberto and Luis Eduardo Herrera manage a collection of varieties here, including SL34. The property includes both coffee plantings and forest, and its milling facilities also serve nearby Las Margaritas.
Variety
SL34 was selected at Scott Agricultural Laboratories in Kenya in the 1930s. Genetic research places it in the Typica-related group. It has strong cup-quality potential under suitable conditions; this Colombian planting offers an opportunity to experience the variety outside its best-known Kenyan setting.
Processing
Hybrid washed combines fermentation in whole cherry with further fermentation after depulping. The remaining fruit material is then washed away before drying. Separating these stages gives the producer control over fermentation while finishing the coffee as a washed preparation.
