Kii is one of three factories operated by Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society in Kirinyaga, near Mount Kenya. Established in 1995, the station takes its name from the nearby Kii River, which supplies processing water. Smallholders bring ripe cherries from their individual farms for shared processing.
Variety
This lot combines four varieties commonly grown in Kenya. SL-28 and SL-34 are long-established Kenyan selections recognized for their quality potential at elevation, while Ruiru 11 and Batian were developed to improve productivity and resistance to coffee berry disease and coffee leaf rust. Because cherries are combined at the washing station, the varieties are presented as a mixed lot rather than as individually separated components.
Processing
The station sorts and pulps incoming cherries, then ferments the coffee to release its mucilage. Washing and soaking follow before the parchment dries on raised beds, where it is turned and protected from excessive heat and overnight moisture. AB identifies a Kenyan bean-size grade, rather than a separate variety.
