Farm and Producer
Hongjun Zhang established Yunlan Estate in 1999 in Menghai County, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan. The farm’s coffee grows at 1,600–1,800 meters in a tropical rainforest setting. Yunlan maintains a diverse collection of varieties, including Gesha, alongside locally selected material, with cultivation and processing experiments developed for the different plantings.
Variety
Gesha, also spelled Geisha, is an Arabica variety with Ethiopian origins. It is valued for high cup-quality potential and floral aromatics, especially under suitable high-elevation growing conditions. Its expression also depends on cultivation, processing, and roasting.
Processing
Natural processing dries the coffee with the cherry surrounding the seed. Contact with the fruit during fermentation and drying can contribute to fruit expression and body; careful moisture management remains important.
