Farm and Producer
The Rodríguez family grows this Batian at Floripondio in Samaipata, in Bolivia’s Santa Cruz department. The family expanded into the region in 2012 and uses Floripondio as a variety nursery, testing how different coffees adapt to its elevation, soils and tropical microclimate. Lemon and tangerine trees separate the variety plantings. This natural selection was grown at 1,710 meters.
Variety
Batian is a Kenyan selection released in 2010, developed for resistance to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease. It brings together several breeding lines, illustrating how disease resilience and specialty-coffee production can be pursued together.
Processing
Natural processing dries the coffee with the cherry surrounding the seed. Contact with the fruit during fermentation and drying can contribute to fruit expression and body; careful moisture management remains important.
